With its plastic-enclosed front porch and spare, well-worn furnishings, Cambodian Cuisine doesn't look like much. But thanks to its proximity to BAM and word-of-mouth buzz from Chowhound types, it's built a reputation as one of Brooklyn's best and most unusual Asian restaurants. Some dishes are worthy of that praise, including niem chow rolls bursting with fresh basil and mint. Upon recent visits, however, most entrees were as dull as the restaurant's name. A Cambodian "chef's salad"—once a refined, vivacious melange of rice noodles, lemongrass, basil, crushed peanuts, and veggies—drowned in a too-oily, too-sweet sauce. Vegetarian dishes contain cabbage, bean sprouts, water chestnuts, and not much else. The gray, stringy beef tasted as disturbing as it looked. What's more, they've raised their prices and imposed a set of rules upon diners that would be laughable if it weren't so obnoxious: Stay longer than 45 minutes, for instance, and you pay $5 for each extra five minutes. Our advice? Save that money and linger as long as you'd like over a better meal at any one of Fort Greene's other restaurants.
