Profile

Smoke, which rose in April '99 from the ashes of the late, lamented Augie's and was inspired by a Paul Auster story, feels more like a living room than like a club. The couch and heavy drapes do more than provide intimate comfort; they give this room some of the finest acoustics you'll find anywhere. Which is why you'll also find some of the best names in jazz here: Trumpeter Wynton Marsalis is a regular, and fleet-fingered pianist Bill Charlap once played four sold-out sets accompanied by Ron Carter and Kenny Washington. Best of all, on many nights, this will cost you no more than the price of a beer.
