Profile
If five crowded floors and eighteen miles of dusty volumes leave you feeling beleaguered, the Strand Annex offers the same sweeping discounts in a downsized, less intimidating environment. The things that make Strand indispensable are preserved: fashionable new fiction, memoirs of the hot political entities of the day, and classics at what amounts to bulk rate prices. The tradeoff is that there are only half as many books on a single sprawling floor and the art section—a strength of the original Strand location—is devoid of anything new or rare. But the small staff is unhurried and able to help you find the things that make this outpost unique: There’s a solid New York City section and a shrine-like table offering the entire Hemmingway and Fitzgerald canon in paperback—all between 50 and 60 percent off, of course.
