Profile
During New York City’s seedy days, Grace Plaza was an infamous drug spot. Today, it's famous as the location of the International Center of Photography. (In 2000, ICP moved from its landmark mansion on Fifth Avenue.) This glass-walled gallery in midtown, designed specifically for photographic installations. ICP was founded in 1974 by Cornell Capa, who wanted to keep the humanitarian documentary work done by his photographer brother, Robert Capa, alive. In keeping with its roots, the museum has mounted thought-provoking shows on topics such as gangs in L.A. and the war in Iraq. But the Center has also evolved to include a wider range of photography, and in 2003 put on its first Triennial, which included contemporary art photographs and videos. It now incorporates conceptual art into its regular exhibits (all of which are temporary, and change four or five times a year).
The SchoolICP offers an MFA and certificate programs in photography, though classes are also open to non-degree students. There are a variety of one to 10 week courses, weekend workshops, and one-day seminars. The school also has a weekly lecture series during the semester. Call 212-857-0001 for course schedule and registration. The school is located across the street at 1114 Sixth Ave.
