Profile
Jeffrey Deitch is an art world legend seen about town in his perfectly round, black spectacles wherever hip-enough events are happening. In SoHo, he has two spaces: one for installations and performances (18 Wooster St.), the other for mostly intimate gallery exhibits (76 Grand St.). Deitch has a reputation for being extravagant with his money, funding the over-the-top mini-stadium show that was Fischerspooner’s smoke-and-Veuve-Clicquot-filled performance in his Wooster Street performance space. (Fischerspooner has since more or less abandoned the art world for the music business.) Italian diva Vanessa Beecroft is his other great find, best known for her performance pieces involving large numbers of barely-clad models standing about for hours on end. An exuberant summer installation by John Connelly Presents artist Assume Vivid Astro Focus—packed with psychedelia, remixed Yoko Ono, and an improvised tattoo parlor—catapulted the young Brazilian into the spotlight. Deitch gave Yoko Ono herself the run of the place.
