Profile
At this tasteful Chelsea gallery, works by videographer Willie Doherty and abstract painter Sean Scully—both of whom have been short-listed for the Tate Modern’s prestigious Turner prize—are on display in a quiet, three-story setting that’s far more intimate than a museum. Established in SoHo in the mid-90s, the gallery moved to the current multi-level building in 1997 and continues to represent only established modern and contemporary artists from Europe and the U.S., including performance artist Michael Landy. Solo exhibitions on the ground floor are supplemented by rotating group exhibitions two flights up. En route, catch a glimpse of directors Carolyn Alexander and Ted Bonin relaxing at their desks in the loft-like second-story office space, which also hosts temporary displays of works that are being prepared for upcoming installations. On the top floor, visitors can browse artist monographs (there's a table with chairs for tired gallery-hoppers) or stroll around the beautifully lit room. For such a large gallery, the staff is small—aside from Alexander and Bonin themselves, there are only four full-timers—but exceptionally well informed, so don’t be afraid to ask questions.
