Profile
Who knew the lowly can was central to so much good art? Clued-in curator Claudia Altman-Siegel apparently did. Her witty show has more types of cans than you can count, and it demonstrates that the object has been—and still is—everywhere. Start with an amazing Campbell’s soup can signed by Andy Warhol, and don’t miss the case of empty beer cans by Cady Noland, Martin Kippenberger’s hilarious beer-can handcuffs, Rachel Harrison’s can of peas in an abstract sculpture, or David Hammons’s lethal mound of dog-food cans. This peach of a show suggests that Budweiser cans are to contemporary artists what Coca-Cola was to Pop artists.
