The Trouble With Jennifer Aniston’s Boyfriend-PR Strategy

Cry, the beloved Aniston.Photo: WireImage

When Jennifer Aniston's fling with noted lady-killer John Mayer ended this weekend, we were bummed — not because we'd booked seats on the Mayerston bandwagon, but because it's exactly what we expected. Consider the math: two Jolie-Pitt pregnancies, and two allegedly serious and tabloid-friendly Aniston relationships that lasted just long enough to ride out the fervor over her ex-husband's glorious new spawn. If you stop and smell the PR, it reeks. Jennifer is a bona fide star, yet her team seems fixated on proving she attracts beefy boyfriends, instead of projecting the image of a self-confident woman who attracts beefy roles. And frankly, we find that strategy questionable.

Isn't it time to rise above the rebound story line? »

Which Olympians Could Be Anna Wintour’s New Arm Candy?

James Blake, Jonathan Horton, and Park Tae-Hwan — all worthy of the Bob.Photo:

The looming dawn of another September Fashion Week means one important thing: 'Tis the season for Anna Wintour to widely grin while squiring her tennis crush Roger Federer around town. We fully support her fascination with the dreamy Swiss ace, but can't help wondering if Anna's love is real, or whether her affections will drift thanks to Olympics mania and all its attendant delectable man-torsos. In this first week alone, we've spotted tons of spry, decorated — or soon-to-medal — athletes who'd make stellar Fashion Week arm candy. So pay heed, A-Dubs: If Roger cancels on you, or you're just feeling frisky, here are some excellent potential heirs to his throne.

Katie Holmes’s Downward Style Spiral

Highway to the denim danger zone.Photo: Splashnews

We're plenty cranky, but only a few things work us into a really frothy righteous rage — our Xanadu DVD disappearing, the popularity of the Twilight books, and of course the resurrection of leggings. But lately, somewhere between the second and sixth photos of Katie Holmes schlumping around L.A. and New York, we've added another thing to the list: Mrs. Cruise's obsession with saggy pegged jeans.

Roughly a year ago, Katie morphed from Tom Cruise's sweetly bland child bride — tagging gamely along with Posh, hiding behind a curtain of hair — to a chicly coiffed and poised fashion plate who was as groomed for the grocery store as she was for the red carpet. It was one of the best style makeovers since Fergie stopped wetting her high-waisted shorts. But now, Katie shuffles to All My Sons rehearsals and her Eli Stone shoot wearing raggedy, baggy jeans either rolled up to the ankle or, worse, pegged there like she's a refugee from one of Tom's eighties flicks.

We're trying to wrap our heads around this one, but... »

Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Red-Carpet Schizophrenia

Sure, the outfit looks good from this angle.Photo: Getty Images

With another summer movie season drawing to a close, we thought we'd finally gotten a handle on the celebrity approach to dressing for a parade of global press tours: Figure out what, exactly, you're trying to sell about yourself, and then pack outfits that are on-point without being identical. For instance, Anne Hathaway’s Get Smart looks each seemed cleverly chosen to rub her ex-boyfriend’s nose in her unavailable hotness; similarly, when Gwyneth Paltrow promoted Iron Man, her endless string of super-short minidresses helpfully reminded us that she’s still a relevant, sexy woman with legs for weeks, rather than just Madonna’s musty old macrobiotic-loving best friend.

Then Maggie Gyllenhaal threw a wrench in our theory. Surely, promoting The Dark Knight was the perfect way for this indie princess to present her quirky personal style as a charming antidote to Hollywood’s cookie-cutter starlets. Instead, she gave us a fashion roller-coaster, sporting a schizophrenic range of looks that made us wonder if she threw them into her bags at random, possibly while blindfolded.

There's a hit, and a whole lot of misses. »

Forecasting ‘The Hills’: A Whole Season in a Single Trailer

As if sensing our fatigue with its omnipresent marquee show, MTV has released a fresh, tear-stained trailer for The Hills designed to convince everyone that its premiere next month heralds a whole new thorny web of intrigue. And we're trying to feel excited, but we've been burned before: Last season devolved into boring retread conversations and anticlimactic three-word confrontations. So pardon our cynicism, but we're fairly sure this teaser — with its taupe love interests, melodramatic one-liners, and ruined mascara — is less a jumping-off point for awesomeness than a souped-up Cliffs Notes reel full of false hope. But to be sure, we ran the trailer through our internal Hills montage-defragging machine to try to interpret the actual path of these "plot twists" — watch for yourselves and see if you agree with our analysis.

The thematic elements, right this way. »

‘Project Runway’ Returns: Our Early Thoughts

Kelli's winning design, Daniel's plastic-cup cocktail dress, and Blayne's onesie from hell.Photos courtesy of Bravo

With all the drama around Project Runway's imminent move to more silver-haired pastures (we STILL can't imagine flipping to Lifetime for something other than old Tori Spelling movies), we greeted last night's premiere of its swan-song season on Bravo with fear. What if the departing honchos gave into temptation to stick it to Harvey Weinstein by running Runway into the ground?

Fortunately, at first blush things are promising. Reprising old favorites like the grocery-store challenge, with corn-husk sorcerer Austin Scarlett judging it, reminded us why we fell in love with the show in the first place. Throw in Tim Gunn lecturing the designers for lacking originality, a character contestant (Stella) whose makeup reminds us of Cher, and the season's theme apparently shaping up to being Heidi Klum's Upper Thighs — did her legs develop a fabric allergy? — we can only conclude that the tingly sensation in our extremities must be…optimism. Here's our take on this season's crop of competitors, and who, in the words of our favorite life coach, just might make it work.

Anne Hathaway Gets Her Chic Revenge

Poor Anne Hathaway. As if it weren't tough enough to promote Get Smart in the wake of dumping her skeevy jailed boyfriend, she had to grapple with last weekend's spate of splashy tabloid headlines about her love life: "The Princess and the Con-Man" on People's cover, and the touchingly subtle "BURNED BY A LOSER" from Us Weekly. If we'd had a month — or even a week — like that, we'd be on day eight of watching Ocean's Eleven while eating only ice cream and not brushing our hair. Instead, Anne has risen from the ashes looking like the proverbial $21 million bucks her ex needs to post bail. Take a look at her fashion from the past few weeks; we think you'll agree that Ms. Hathaway is the perfect poster child for how looking hot really is the best revenge.

Which Celebrities Can Pull Off Couture?

Armani Privé, Chanel, and John Galliano.Photos: Imaxtree

Nothing against our beloved New York Fashion Week, but thanks to the couture collections' froth and fantasy, and the Technicolor head-trip that is menswear, this is one of our favorite times of the year. After the recent slew of shows, we are dying to see which impressionable celebrities dare to try this stuff at home; many of them will, and a few might — might — even succeed. Based on our personal highlights from this week's shows, we're predicting which stars can pull off that walk on the wild side, and who'll fall through the wormhole and come out on the worst-dressed list.

Fugs at the BET Awards: Where the Ceremony Gets in the Way of the Party

Fergie loses the Members Only jacket for this special occasion.Photo: GettyImages

When it comes to awards shows, we’ve got home viewing down to a science: booze, chips, and quickly pausing the TiVo on pissy facial expressions and unexpected nip slips. But we'd always been curious how the viewer experience compares to attending the show. So we were stoked to be tottering toward the Shrine Auditorium in L.A. on Tuesday night, with tickets in hand, ready to watch the BET Awards in person. Would we bump into anyone at the cash bar or pass toilet paper to Ashanti under the stall door? And most important, could we sit through an entire televised event without the comfort of our sweatpants? The answers: Yes, no, and… sort of.

The Teen Idol Is Dead, Long Live the (Reality-TV) Teen Idol

How many horsemen? We lost count.Photos: Getty Images

If all that boring, repetitive "drama" on The Hills — and the attendant boring, repetitive magazine covers — left you with a raging case of Untalented-Idiot Fatigue, we bring bad news: It's not letting up anytime soon. This week alone, news broke that former Lauren Conrad colleague Whitney Port may get her own reality spinoff show, former Lauren Conrad paramour Brody Jenner will star in Bromance — in which cheesy dudes compete to fill what we assume is Spencer Pratt’s old spot in Jenner’s douchey entourage — and Nicole Richie, ostensibly Lauren Conrad's progenitor as the genre's original dirty-blonde, do-nothing waif, is shopping a series in which women compete to "become the next Nicole Richie" — i.e., they compete to become famous for no reason. That ringing in your ears? It's the death knell tolling for actual, legitimately gifted teen idols. Those teen idols are dead.
