Fug Girls: Blake Lively Wears Tragic Jumpsuit to Miss Sixty

Last season, the Miss Sixty show boasted a surprisingly A-list front row, even if they did all look unenthused about being there. This time? Not so much. We suspect most of Fashion Week’s A-listers were home curling their hair and practicing their dance moves in case they ran into Justin Timberlake at William Rast across town. The Miss Sixty folks did seem like they were doing their best to prevent anyone in their front row from dashing out as soon as the scheduled–for–8 p.m. show was over, in hopes of making William Rast at 9 p.m. They didn’t dim the lights and send the models out until ten minutes to nine, and only after the photographers in the pit started stomping their feet and chanting, “Go! Go! Go!”

Survival Tips

After the Storm: Tory Burch Survived Deluge by Going Barefoot

Though Gap's spring presentation this morning was light and cheery, we were still haunted by memories of last night's Tropical Storm Hanna. Patrick Robinson was toiling away in a windowless room last night when the storm hit. "Was there a hurricane?" he laughed. "I didn't even notice." Photographer Scott Schuman, better known as the Sartorialist, made his assistant tote around umbrellas so they could keep taking fashionista-on-the-street portraits. "I just shot and tried to keep the camera dry," Schuman said. "I had an excuse, if I didn't have enough pictures for Style.com — 'It's raining!' But I think I came up with some pretty good stuff. I like that kind of crazy combination of people still dressed, you know, running in the rain." Tory Burch did the unthinkable when she was stranded in the downpour: She took off her shoes and walked home barefoot, "which I never, ever do," she blurted out quickly. [Ed. note: To be fair, one of your Cut editors totally did the same thing, weeping all the way.]

Fug Girls Contemplate Telling Amanda Hearst That Her Hanger Strap Is Exposed

The universe should know better than to send us to a fashion show that requires walking through what we affectionately term "the wig district." When we're faced with that kind of temptation, odds are we will get sidetracked, fall into a beehive or a fifties bouffant, and never be seen again. Indeed, we're wondering if Veronica Webb struggled through the same test of her willpower. At the Y-3 show on Sunday afternoon, the statuesque Webb showed up with a fake-looking banged hairdo, and we are not the only ones in the crowded bleachers who opined that she might have dropped it onto her head ten minutes prior.

Fug Girls: Maria Sharapova Is One of Those Rare People Who Can Actually Wear Léger

Hervé Léger by Max Azria needs to start showing in a larger venue. The Salon at Bryant Park was packed to the gills with people who'd apparently contracted a raging case of bandage-dress fever since February, and we practically had to promise the PR girls our first-born children to get inside.

But get inside we did! »

Waiter Saves Tips, Funds Own Collection

Last night we wound up not at the Tent for the big Rock & Republic show, but at a loft on West 26th Street. Once there, though, we were heartened to discover the kind of fashion story we don't hear about enough. In a sparsely populated room, designer Levon Samoniantz of the label Levhon was showing his first collection. His only other public showing had been a presentation for buyers at Henri Bendel last year. What transpired sounds a bit like getting kicked off of Project Runway. After the buyers told him his clothes were too dark and they didn't like his sportswear, Samoniantz went home crushed. Then he started having dreams about models turning into cars (really), inspiring his current collection of candy-colored eveningwear.

Front Row

In the Firing Line Behind Richie and Ricci

As the Fug Girls noted earlier, the front-row trifecta of Nicole Richie, Christina Ricci, and Winona Ryder created a flashbulb frenzy at DKNY this morning. Photographer Jeremy Kost, who has been shooting videos for us this week, was positioned right behind them, capturing the moment from their perspective. It is nothing short of blinding.

Preen Shows New Ideas for Denim, Chiffon

Though we've heard talk of designers showing extra special clothes this season to lure shoppers in These Tough Economic Times, we hadn't found any. But the Preen show this afternoon changed our minds. After a sexy asymmetrical white minidress with mesh insets, out came an oversize denim jacket with contrast white stitching. It billowed and looked almost like a cape — definitely a new way to do denim. Cocktail dresses came in black, white, and punchy Coca-Cola red. Some had mesh insets and lacing that looked suspended on the model's bodies — a lot of good engineering went into those pieces. And if laced-up tight mesh isn't your thing, Preen also showed chiffon dresses in peach and navy with tiered, perfectly flouncy ruffles.

Brandy Unrestrained at Tracy Reese

If designers need a front-row celebrity cheerleader, call Brandy. As in Moesha and "The Boy Is Mine." We haven't seen her in a while, but she looked great in the front row of Tracy Reese this afternoon. She ditched the blonde-gone-wrong hair and wore a smile that never left her face. With eyes as big as a cartoon bunny, she was in utter awe of everything that walked down the runway. She was the exact opposite of the industry people who work extra hard to be cool cucumbers in the front row. She got so excited at one point that she dared to bounce in her seat and snap her fingers. When the music picked up, Brandy sang along and waved her hands. She even talked to models, telling one in a purple pastel floral, mid-walk, "You go, girl!"

Fug Girls: PETA’s Got Nothing on Richie-Ricci-Ryder at DKNY

The first thing we heard walking into DKNY in the tents this morning was one PR girl saying to the other, “Winona is back there — she just wants a Diet Coke before she comes out.” So it turns out we have something in common with Winona Ryder: the inability to be seen by other people before we’ve had our sweet, sweet caffeinated elixir.

Three Is a Trend...

The Shining: Sequins Dazzle Down the Runways

The season's clothes aren't content with quietly wandering into rooms. No, come spring, dresses and blazers will be blinding, courtesy of sequins. Alexandre Herchcovitch's version mixed asymmetric foils of gold, coral, silver, and navy together on a minidress, while Erin Fetherston's iridescent top packed shimmer into every inch, serving as a nice counterpoint to her transparent pants. Meanwhile, ThreeAsFour selectively stacked an evening gown full of baseball-size discs. This spring, it'll be time to shine. For more sequins, check out our slideshow.

Dour Celebrities

Why Is This Woman Smiling?

The Fug Girls suggested that Mary-Kate Olsen was flashing a giant grin at Rock & Republic because she's, ahem, "getting laid." Our spy saw MK's versatile smile, too. While waiting backstage with Jessica Szohr, a waiter bumped into Mary-Kate and spilled an entire glass of champagne down the front of her outfit. "She was so sweet about it," said the spy. "The waiter couldn't stop apologizing, and she was just like, 'Seriously, it's okay. I'm wearing black.'" The spy did say that after the ten thousandth apology, she gave the waiter her "Go. Away. Now. Please." grin. But it was a grin, nonetheless!

Anna’s Choice

Saturday's storm pushed the men's U.S. Open final to Monday, but the real showdown that day won't be between Roger Federer and his opponent; rather, it'll be Roger vs. Jack and Lazaro. The venue? Anna Wintour's heart. The big championship match is slated for 5 p.m., the exact time Proenza Schouler's show is supposed to begin. Our girl A-Dubs may have every advantage in the world, but the ability to be two places at once probably isn't one of them (yet — surely there's a mad scientist on her payroll). Whom will she choose: the darlings of the fashion world, or her dishy boy-toy on the court? Lay your bets now: Our money's on Roger winning this match at love. Pun definitely intended.

You Can’t Offend Waris Ahluwalia

Waris Ahluwalia — best known for his roles in Wes Anderson movies and his House of Waris jewelry line — looked at us quizzically at Saturday's Elise Overland presentation, as though trying to remember if he'd met us before. "I actively chose a while ago to go, I'm not going to remember anything," he explained. "Sort of a meditative thing: I thought I would keep my head clear, and thoughts would flow in and out. And then I became an actor." There are occupational hazards to this M.O., such as memorizing lines or awkward social encounters. "We were up in Hudson, on the street. This guy comes up: 'Hey.' I'm like, 'Hey, nice to meet you.' And, like, beginning of the summer we had spent a weekend at his house," said Waris. But he has adopted a credo passed onto him by Simon Doonan: "Be unoffendable." We decided to hold him to it.

Foxy Brown Gets Alexander Wang to Booty-Shake at After-Party

We caught Foxy Brown after her performance at Alexander Wang after-party at Cortlandt Alley last night, her first show in NYC since being released from Rikers Island earlier this year. Decked out in a custom fuchsia Alexander Wang dress, Foxy treated the sweaty crowd to some of the best of Il Na Na, and Wang to some stage time. "The highlight was fucking Alexander doing the fucking booty shake what your mama gave ya! That was fly," Foxy told us. “So you're right at home at Fashion Week?” we asked the Park Slope native. "It feels so good," Foxy said. "Karl said to me, and also Marc … they all said to me that they never saw a little black girl that was so interested in couture and haute couture. I would be in our house, with the brush singing and [my mom's] fur coats. And her high-heeled slippers … my mom has an Hermès Birkin bag from back in the day that I rock now and is sicker than any bag ever. Fashion is totally embedded in me."

So what else does she have going on? »

Isabeli Fontana Is Saturday’s Top Model

After casting directors passed on Indian beauty Lakshmi Menon last February, she finally sashayed down New York runways for Alexander Wang and Lacoste yesterday. (She looked blazing in Wang's pink neon blazer.) But Wang played it safe and relied on established runway stars Raquel Zimmermann and Lily Donaldson to open and close his show, respectively. Alexandre Herchcovitch was conservative too, opening with Daiane Conterato and closing with Bruna Tenorio. Familiar face Chanel Iman opened the leather-loaded Rock & Republic show. We loved to see Brazilian mommy Isabeli Fontana show off her womanly curves to open and close Rosa Cha. Between the Vogue-sponsored after-party and all the buzz around designer Amir Slama's new Soho store, Fontana took Saturday.

PETA Protests

BREAKING: PETA Hits DKNY (Update)

We hear there's an anti-fur protest outside the tents. Protesters are wearing jumpsuits covered in presumably fake fur and blood, chanting, "DKNY, how many animals have to die?" Catchy! They're alternating with "No more profanity, stop the insanity!" Is this having any effect on the attendees? You could say that. One showgoer turned to his friend and said, "You know, that actually makes me want to buy fur more." If anyone has more info or photos, send them our way! Update! The protesters got onstage with a banner during the finale. Security hustled them out and police stormed into the tents. It's chaos, people!

At ThreeAsFour, Sean Lennon Says He Loves Animals: Eating Them, Wearing Them, Having Them As Pets

Backstage yesterday at the ThreeAsFour show, we caught up Sean Lennon, who wore a magisterial women's coat with gold buttons and a top hat decorated with Native American bands. His girlfriend, Charlotte Kemp Muhl, wore a coyote headdress. "I got it from, like, these weird mountain men in Wyoming," he explained. "The guy we bought it from said he hadn't seen any people since the last, like, mountain-men meeting, which was … a year before. He was like, 'I live in nature, in the woods, I don't see any people. I'm so happy to talk to you guys.' There were 100 teepees in a field." So Lennon is cool with fur? "I'm certainly not against fur if they're hunting it themselves and wearing it to clothe themselves and their children in mountainous areas. You know what I mean?" He went on: "I feel like most people that criticize fur are wearing leather shoes, so that bothers me. I love animals. I have pets. I love to have them as pets. I love to eat animals, and I love to wear them. I feel that's okay for me as a human being. Yeah, it's been that way for thousands of years."

The Fug Girls Know Why Mary-Kate Olsen Is Smiling

We're accustomed to seeing the Olsens skulking around town with their arms over their wee faces and a battalion of bodyguards preventing any errant air from being breathed in their direction. So it was a shock Saturday night at Rock & Republic to see one of the twins actually allowing herself to spend a full fifteen minutes in view of the masses — and looking happy, to boot. The Olsen in question laughed and smiled at the people around her, boasted shockingly bouncy hair, and did not appear to have arisen recently from the depths of a Starbucks Dumpster. "That has to be Ashley," the girls behind us decided. "She looks so clean." Well, hang on to your shower gel, ladies, because the well-groomed and jolly Olsen in attendance was in fact Mary-Kate. And if her mood is any indication, girlfriend has been getting laid. Or at least that's our pet theory.

Fug Girls: Tropical Storm Hanna Has No Respect for Fashion

One thing we love about Ugly Betty's Becki Newton is that she's game for anything when it comes to Fashion Week. Saturday's Vena Cava show was not the first time we've seen her at a presentation, which typically put models on a dais while guests mill around with cocktails — meaning celebrities have to be prepared to stand and mingle with the masses. Yet Newton appeared completely comfortable, cheerfully congratulating the designers and giving a long on-camera interview before polishing off her Champagne and dashing out into the rain.

Unfortunately, Newton was one of the only famous faces undeterred by the weather. The only others we saw were socialites Ferebee Bishop and Byrdie Bell — the latter still blonde — and Leigh Lezark, who ogled the pretty, pretty dresses without ever removing her thick-framed white sunglasses. You know the ones: Chloë Sevigny discarded them about three years ago.

By the time the hour-long event ended, the rain pounded down in an all-out deluge. Give them credit for trying: Via Spiga, which collaborated with Vena Cava on the shoes worn in Saturday's presentation, apparently provided a bunch of supersize souvenir umbrellas for the soggy patrons who came to Chelsea. There may not have been enough to go around — which in turn may have caused attendees to gank the umbrellas of innocent, unknowing bloggers still working the room — but the idea certainly won them some points. Too bad Tropical Storm Hanna has no respect for fashion. Or for our shoes.

Fug Girls: Anna Wintour, Jessica Szohr Shelter From Storm at Alexander Wang

As Tropical Storm Hanna's sloppy seconds roared through New York on Saturday afternoon, bedraggled guests poured into Alexander Wang's show and were greeted with two welcome sights: small bottles of white wine and Anna Wintour's shiny, bone-dry bob. Naturally, the Vogue editrix bore no effects of the inclement weather. Either she has the world's best umbrella-wrangler, or even the rain is afraid to bump into her. She also survived wearing a tight ribbed sweater on a humid day with nary a perspiration stain. We wish our sweat glands were so obedient. Maybe she secretly had hers removed in an exotic operation in Guam. You heard it here first.
